White House
If James Brown was still here and he jammed with Rage Against the Machine and the Roots, the groove created would sound something like the funk-hip-hop-rock sound of White House. White House bring conscious raps and hip-hop stylings to old-skool funk with a Sri-Lankan/Aboriginal rhythm section.
Half Sri-Lankan and half Indigenous, the name White House is meant to be paradoxical – a bit like George Clinton naming his band Parliament. This mix makes for an infectiously tribal sound and as soon as these guys start a show people cannot help but dance.
Sonic Nomad aka Grant Leigh Saunders from Taree is the front man for the band, who spins political rhyme and from time to time, straight out love; Allan Morris, who lives in Port Macquarie, casually forces through solos others just play air guitar to; Sri Lankan bass machine Dinesh Ekanayake pops and growls on bass, and the rubbery wrists of Chaminda Samaraweera (also Sri Lankan) provide the groovy backbeats on drums. AND Every now and again White House employs a friend in world renowned Hip Hop DJ, Jun Mayamoto aka DJ Moto, who scratches and mixes on the decks to add yet another dimension and colour to the White House vibe.
Altogether they bring an original and exciting new combination of sounds and styles that can only be described as FRESH.
Being the first ‘black fellas’ in the White House, their first EP is aptly named Yes We Can. The EP demonstrates the versatility and confidence of an experienced professional group of musicians vying for their place in the Australian music industry and the world. If James Brown was still here and he jammed with Rage Against the Machine and the Roots, the groove created would sound something like the funk-hip-hop-rock sound of White House.
