Boolarng Nangamai Artists
In May 2009, Arts Mid North Coast invited the artists from Boolarng-Nangamai on the South Coast of NSW to the Mid North Coast to conduct a series of weaving workshops in nine local Aboriginal communities. The workshops were a great success and a regional school of woven fish were produced which can be seen at the Saltwater Freshwater Festival.
The Boolarng Nangamai artists are developing strong links with artists on the Mid North Coast and will return next year to carry out Master classes in Weaving so that our own artists will be able to conduct weaving workshops in the area and pass down this important traditional cultural practice to younger generations.
The Boolarng Nangamai artists (Boolarng = Together in Biripi language group and Nangamai = Dreaming in Sydney Dhawarral language group) share a collective passion for sustaining Aboriginal Culture. Based in Gerringong, the Boolarng Nangamai Aboriginal Art + Culture Studio has been running since 2005, with Boolarng Nangamai Aboriginal Corporation founded by Kelli Ryan in late 2007.
The artists come from different Aboriginal communities from New South Wales and Queensland, local traditional people as well as inland and coastal people. The Illawarra South Coast is home to the artists and Gerringong is the heart of keeping their Aboriginal Culture alive.
